5 Wrap Around Porches That Scream Summer

There’s something magical about a wrap around porch. In the United States, they originally gained popularity in the South, where they offered a respite from the intense heat. Having a covered area near the house allowed folks to enjoy the outdoors from multiple sides of the house. And particularly for homes in the country, a wrap around porch offered a wide range of views. The covered porch also shaded the ground floor windows from the intense sun coming in.

In Portland, you don’t see a ton of these porches. Obviously the weather is quite different, for one. But Portland is also a city, meaning the concept of sweeping views from the porch isn’t quite the same. It makes sense then, that some of Portland’s most common home styles, such as Craftsman and Foursquare, typically have a wide front porch that spans only the street-facing facade.

But wrap around porches, when you find these special gems, still have a lot to offer for Portlanders. In the rainy season, you gain the ability to enjoy your yard from multiple vantage points. (More useable outdoor space when it’s raining… hard to argue with.) Now that we’re entering one of the hottest weeks in Portland’s history, though, you might also want to consider the breezy affordances of a sprawling, wrap around porch.

#1 – 3232 SE 26th Ave.

Let’s start off with a truly spectacular example of a Portland wrap around porch. This one maintains a ton of privacy, with greenery surrounding the porch and giving it the feel of a raised terrace looking down on a canopy of trees. It also wraps around into an enclosed sun room, a light and bright bonus space.

The interior of the home retains a ton of period charm, especially in the living and dining areas. Large bay windows look out onto the front porch. A cozy fireplace makes itself the centerpiece of the living room. And the original fir hardwood floors really take the cake for giving you that old world feel. Well, maybe everywhere except the spectacularly remodeled kitchen, which offers you all the most up-to-date amenities you could want.

Next let’s take a trip up to the Eliot neighborhood in Northeast Portland. This home is a Foursquare, but one with a lot of lovely embellishments. And the porch is one! It wraps around one side of the house, passing a beautiful bay window, with elegant white columns and fencing down its length.

What about inside, though? The majestic Foursquare layout means a good separation of space but not a paucity of it. Multiple lovely living spaces give way to an updated kitchen with island and bar seats. From the kitchen, doors open out on the back porch and the yard beyond, where you’ll find a beautiful stone patio. Like any good home with a porch, the outdoors here feel simply like an extension of the house.

This next one is ideal for anyone who loves the idea of a wrap around porch but maybe not so much the notion of sweeping it. You get the best of both worlds here, with a porch that extends halfway down the sides of the home but not all the way around the house. It’s a simple but effective solution, and doesn’t sacrifice the elegance of the porch.

By the looks of this home, you’d think it belongs on some country estate. But it’s situated near the river in trendy Brooklyn – again, the best of both worlds. Mature landscaping certainly ensures your privacy here, and if you’d like a little time in the sun, not just under the porch roof, a beautiful new deck spans one side of the house. Inside, you’ll find modern updates, like the gorgeous gas range, alongside romantic period details, like the clawfoot tub.

Next up we hop across the river and further south to a home with a completely different feel. So far we’ve been looking at turn of the century homes. This build dates from the 80’s – nearly a hundred years newer. Accordingly, some of the styling is more modern, and that includes the wrap around porch.

Built on a hill, the porch slides along the side of the house to become a raised porch on the slope of the hill. There, you’ll find French doors inviting you into the home. But the real bonus here? An outdoor fireplace. This porch ensures that you can make the most out of any weather. Imagine whittling away the hot hours of the afternoon in the shade, then lighting a fire once evening’s cool comes on? Not too shabby.

Finally, we’ll finishing with another Foursquare, one that’s particularly stately. The porch hear wraps around half of the home, amid Craftsman details on the eaves and square post columns. This one’s on a corner lot, making it ideal for those who like to see the action. People watching, anyone?

Inside, you’ll find a ton of possibilities. Beautiful built-ins complement the spaces, of which there are many. And an ADU on the lower level is perfect for extra rental income or multi-generational living. The location in Northeast Portland is a draw as well. The King farmer’s market sits just steps away – and we’re willing to bet there are plenty of tasty things to eat and drink. Take them back and enjoy them on that gorgeous porch!
